Welcome to Mocs.ca
Thank you for shopping at my on-line store. My name is Jessica Bekker and my family name is Little Mustache.
I am a member of the Piikani Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy in Alberta Canada.
Many of my family members are involved in the crafting of our authentic 100% First Nations made moccasins and mukluks on the
Piikani Reservation.
Blackfoot Moccasin History
Traditional Blackfoot Moccasins were made with deer, elk or buffalo hide. To mark and distinguish the
moccasins as Blackfoot, the crafter would create a small four piece fringe on the heel. Dress moccasins were decorated with
porcupine quills, seeds and berries. Glass Beads are now used but the patterns have been adapted from earlier times and reflect the Blackfoot
culture and land. The Moccasins and Mukluks for sale on our site are all adorned with these unique patterns created by individual Piikani members.
The Piikani have been know in the past as the Peigan and Blackfoot. First Nations such as the Piikani have been
known as Native, Aboriginal, North American Indian and Indigenous.
According to Little Mustache oral history, the name Blackfoot is believed to have originated from the color of our Moccasins.
As my ancestors would follow the buffalo across the plains, their moccasins would turn black from crossing the charred areas of prairie that that
had burnt from wildfires.
